Fantasy Short Drama: The Biggest Label Two Apps Share, and It Behaves Differently on Each
Rebirth, immortals and time loops, gathered from the platforms’ own Fantasy labels. The format carries supernatural premises easily because it never has to explain them.

Where to find them
104 of the 134 are on NetShort, the rest spread across 1 other app.
Our take
Fantasy is the biggest label in our catalogue that more than one app actually uses.
That sounds like a small thing. It is the reason this page can answer a question most of the other genre pages here cannot: when two different apps both call something “fantasy”, are they describing the same kind of series?
We can check, because we hold 134 fantasy-labelled series — 104 on NetShort and 30 on ShortMax — with episode counts and paywall positions read from each platform’s own listing.
The answer is no.
The same label, two different shapes
Start with the number you would normally be given: the 134 series run a median of 41.5 episodes.
That figure describes neither platform.
| Series here | Median episodes | That platform’s median | Difference | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NetShort | 104 | 40 | 42 | −2 |
| ShortMax | 30 | 51 | 61 | −10 |
| Combined | 134 | 41.5 | — | — |
On NetShort, a fantasy series is an ordinary NetShort series — two episodes shorter than the app’s median, which is nothing. On ShortMax, a fantasy series runs ten episodes shorter than the rest of that app’s catalogue, which is one of the larger gaps we have measured.
So “fantasy short dramas run short” is true, but only on one app, and for reasons that belong to that app rather than to the genre. Say it without the platform attached and you have made a claim about a format when you were only ever looking at one company’s commissioning.
The combined 41.5 deserves a word too. It sits close to NetShort’s figure purely because NetShort supplies 104 of the 134 series. Weight the two shelves differently and the “genre median” moves without a single series changing length. A median across two catalogues that differ by twenty episodes is a number about the sample, not about the genre.
Why almost no other label can be checked this way
Most labels on this site live on exactly one app, so the question cannot even be asked. The reason is that the three platforms file their catalogues in completely different ways:
- NetShort tags freely and by plot mechanic — 275 of its series carry two tropes, 104 carry three. This is where labels like revenge, karma payback and rebirth come from, and they exist nowhere else.
- ShortMax gives each series exactly one genre and no plot tags at all — 401 of its 402. Its shelves are clean, mutually exclusive and much coarser.
- ReelShort publishes a tag list we do not use, because it mixes cast names in with categories, so all 766 of its series are unlabelled here.
Fantasy is one of the few words that happens to appear in both NetShort’s and ShortMax’s vocabularies. That coincidence is what makes this page a measurement rather than a description.
What sits alongside it
On the NetShort side, where series carry several tags, fantasy travels with:
| Rides along with | Of the 104 on NetShort |
|---|---|
| Underdog rise | 29 |
| Fantasy romance | 20 |
| Revenge | 12 |
| Rebirth | 9 |
| Feel good | 9 |
Underdog rise on more than a quarter of the NetShort titles is the clearest signal here: the fantasy premise is very often a delivery mechanism for a status-reversal plot rather than a genre in its own right. The 30 ShortMax titles contribute nothing to that table, because ShortMax never assigns a second label — a fantasy series there may well also be a revenge story, and the platform simply never says so.
The paywall does not care what genre this is
We hold the free-episode count for all 134. For the 133 with a usable episode count — the exception is dealt with below — the free opening runs a median of 9 episodes, from 1 to 15, and not one of the 134 is free from first episode to last.
That is indistinguishable from the catalogue as a whole. Whatever else the genre label predicts, it does not predict how far you get before paying. On this format, the paywall is a platform policy, not a genre property — we have now checked that on every shelf large enough to check it on, and it has held every time.
One number on this shelf is wrong, and we are leaving it visible
The episode counts here run from 1 to 100. The 1 is not a one-episode drama. It is The Exiled Necromancer, and the 1 is a mistake in the platform’s own structured data: NetShort’s page declares a single episode while the same page lists 50 and locks the eleventh.
We caught it because it produced an impossible result elsewhere — briefly, it made our own figures claim a series was “free from start to finish” when it charges from episode 11. It does not have a page on this site, so it is absent from the list below, but it is still counted in the 134 and it still sets the bottom of that range.
We have left it in rather than quietly dropping it, because a catalogue that silently deletes the records it dislikes is a catalogue you cannot check. If you see a 1-episode entry anywhere on this site, that is what it is: the platform’s number, published as we received it, flagged where we know it is wrong.
How to read the shelf below
Every figure here comes from the catalogue behind the database, rebuilt from the platforms’ own pages by script rather than typed in by hand. We hold the episode count and the paywall position for all 134; the finder filters them by length.
There is no ranking and there will not be one. Nobody on this site has watched these, and no platform publishes a rating we could borrow. What the data supports is narrower: if you are browsing this shelf on ShortMax expect something shorter than that app’s norm, if you are browsing it on NetShort expect an ordinary NetShort length, and in both cases expect to pay somewhere around the ninth episode.

How this page was built
The 134 series on this page carry Fantasy as a genre label in the catalogue of the platform that publishes them. We do not tag series ourselves, which means this page is exactly as complete, and as inconsistent, as the platforms' own labelling. Episode counts and runtimes are read from each platform's listing for that specific series. We do not score series and we publish no rating of our own, because nobody here has watched all 134 of them. One thing we cannot tell you: no platform publishes a dependable finished/ongoing flag, so a series that wrapped last year and one still posting episodes look identical to us. Where a card here says still releasing, read it as “we have not seen an ending”, not as a confirmed schedule.
