Do Old Short Dramas Become Free? On ReelShort, Not One Series Under Six Months Old Is
ReelShort lets you watch 108 of its 766 series from first episode to last without paying. Date each listing and a clear pattern appears: none of the 238 listed in the last six months is one of them, while about a quarter of those listed a year or more ago are.

ReelShort is the only app we read where you can regularly watch a whole series without hitting a paywall: 108 of its 766 series run free from the first episode to the last. NetShort and ShortMax have none.
That raises an obvious question nobody seems to have answered. Which 108?
The answer turns out to be mostly a matter of age. Not one of the 238 ReelShort series listed in the last six months is free to the end. Among those listed a year or more ago, about one in four is.
How we dated the listings
ReelShort does not publish a release date on its series pages, and neither does anyone else we read. What it does publish is an address, and every series address ends in the same kind of 24-character code.
That code appears to begin with a timestamp: the moment the listing was created. We are inferring that from how IDs of this shape are normally built, so we checked it before relying on it:
- All 766 decode to plausible dates, from October 2022 to August 2026.
- None is later than the day we collected the catalogue (2 September 2026), which a misread code would eventually produce.
- When we re-checked every address in September, the 21 old ReelShort addresses that forward to a replacement all pointed forward in time, to a later date. A wrong reading would scatter those in both directions.
One more thing to hold onto: this is the date the current listing was created, not necessarily the date the series first came out. Listings get rebuilt, and those 21 forwarding addresses are examples of exactly that. So “age” on this page means how long this listing has existed, which is the best measure available and not a perfect one.
Free to the end, by age of listing
Age is measured to 2 September 2026, the day we read the catalogue.
| Listing age | Series | Free from first episode to last | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 6 months | 238 | 0 | 0% |
| 6–12 months | 148 | 16 | 10.8% |
| 12–18 months | 143 | 35 | 24.5% |
| 18–24 months | 130 | 20 | 15.4% |
| 2–3 years | 93 | 28 | 30.1% |
| Over 3 years | 14 | 9 | 64.3% |
Put more simply: of the 386 series listed less than a year ago, 16 are free to the end (4.1%). Of the 380 listed a year or more ago, 92 are (24.2%). Free-to-the-end series were listed at a median date of February 2025; the rest at a median of November 2025.
The edge is sharper than the trend
The most useful line in that table is the first one.
A share of zero out of 238 is not noise. The youngest free-to-the-end series we found, Secrets and Soulmates, a 117-episode series, had been listed for 215 days. Nothing younger than that, of any length or kind, gives you the whole story free.
There is one reason to be careful with that number, and we checked it. ReelShort created an unusually large batch of listings in April 2026, 119 in a single month, many of them on the same few days. If those were somehow different, they could be producing the zero on their own. They are not. Take the April batch out and the under-six-months group still has 119 series and none free to the end.
At the other extreme, the oldest listings in the catalogue lean heavily the other way. The three earliest, all from late 2022, are all free from start to finish, and so are nine of the fourteen listings more than three years old.
It is a tendency, not a clock
It would be tidy to say that series become free at a certain age. The table does not support that. The 18–24 month group is less often free than the 12–18 month group, 15.4% against 24.5%. Most series over two years old still charge.
So the honest version is this. On ReelShort, a new series is never free to the end; an older one sometimes is; and the older it is, the better its chances. Whether that is a deliberate policy of freeing up the back catalogue, or simply that the series which happen to be free are the ones still listed after other old series have gone, we cannot tell from outside. Both would produce the pattern above.
What does not change with age
For series that still stop somewhere, the free opening does not get more generous as they get older. It sits at a median of ten episodes in every age group up to eighteen months, and at nine or ten up to three years old, the same number we have found on every other cut of the catalogue.
What does change is length. Listings under six months old run a median of 50 episodes; those two to three years old, 75. So the same ten free episodes cover 22.7% of a typical new series that stops and 11.0% of a typical two-to-three-year-old one. Older series are more often free outright, but the ones that are not ask you to take more on trust.
This is a ReelShort question only
Neither of the other two apps we catalogue has a single series free from first episode to last: none of NetShort’s 717, none of ShortMax’s 402. There is nothing for age to explain. We also cannot date their listings: ShortMax’s IDs are plain numbers, and we have not been able to confirm what NetShort’s encode.
What to do with this
- If you want to finish a ReelShort series without paying, do not start with the new releases. Nothing listed in the six months before our reading was free to the end.
- Look at older listings, and check the series page before you start. ReelShort prints where its paywall sits on every series page; a series that is free to the end simply has no locked episodes.
- Expect a quarter, not a majority. Even among listings more than a year old, three in four still charge somewhere.
- Treat today’s free series as a setting, not a promise. A paywall position is something the platform can change, and our figures are one reading taken on 2 September 2026.
Every figure here comes from the catalogue behind the database, read from ReelShort’s own series pages, with each listing’s age decoded from its address as described above. The free-to-the-end status is ReelShort’s own published paywall position, for all 766 series.
