Our take
Karma payback is the biggest trope label we track. 187 series carry it — more than any of the other 33 labels in our catalogue, ahead of underdog rise (170) and revenge (150).
It is also the label most likely to mislead you about how this format is organised, because of one fact that no glossary mentions: all 187 are on the same app.
The label is one platform’s filing system, not a property of the format
Three platforms publish catalogues we can read. Only one of them files by plot mechanic:
| Platform | Series in our catalogue | Carrying any trope label |
|---|---|---|
| ReelShort | 766 | 0 |
| NetShort | 717 | 643 |
| ShortMax | 402 | 1 |
NetShort tags nearly nine in ten of its series with something like “karma payback” or “underdog rise”. ShortMax publishes genre categories but almost no plot-mechanic labels. ReelShort publishes neither — its catalogue pages give titles and episode counts, and the classification layer simply is not there.
So when you browse a karma payback shelf, you are browsing NetShort’s shelf. “Which app has the most karma payback dramas?” has no answer — not because the other two make none, but because they do not label them, and we are not going to invent labels by reading titles and guessing.
One more thing about where these labels come from. NetShort publishes a single flat list of tags per series. Sorting those into “genre” and “trope” — deciding that fantasy describes a world and karma payback describes a mechanism — is our editorial call, not the platform’s. The tags are theirs. The two-column filing is ours.
What separates it from revenge and underdog rise
These three labels sound like the same story told three ways, and readers reasonably assume they overlap almost completely. They overlap, but far less than that.
Of the 187 karma payback series:
- 47 also carry underdog rise (25%)
- 44 also carry revenge (24%)
- only 7 carry all three
- 103 — well over half — carry neither of the other two
So the majority of karma payback series are not filed as revenge stories and not filed as underdog stories. The label is doing work of its own, and the distinction the platform seems to be drawing is about who acts:
- Revenge: the wronged party goes after the person who wronged them. The protagonist drives the reckoning.
- Underdog rise: the protagonist climbs. The people who dismissed them are left behind by the climb, not targeted by it.
- Karma payback: the reckoning arrives, but not necessarily because the protagonist engineered it. Consequence catches up with the antagonist.
We should be clear about what that last paragraph is. It is a reading of how the labels are applied across 187 series, not a definition NetShort publishes. The platform does not document what it means by these terms. If you want the boundary stated authoritatively, nobody — including us — can give you that.
Series on this shelf carry 2.25 trope labels on average — against 1.75 across every trope-labelled series we hold — and only 19 of the 187 carry karma payback and nothing else. This is a tagging system built for stacking, not for sorting into exclusive bins.
Expect to commit around 45 episodes
Karma payback runs longer than its neighbours. Median episode counts:
| Label | Series | Median episodes |
|---|---|---|
| Karma payback | 187 | 45 |
| Underdog rise | 170 | 37 |
| Revenge | 150 | 40 |
The full range for karma payback is 10 to 78 episodes, and it clusters in the middle:
| Episodes | Series |
|---|---|
| 10–29 | 33 |
| 30–49 | 68 |
| 50–69 | 81 |
| 70 and over | 5 |
Nearly half of them sit in the 50–69 band. If you are picking a label to start with and you want something short, this is the wrong shelf — underdog rise and revenge both run shorter at the median, and there are 33 karma payback series under 30 episodes if you want to stay here and still keep it brief.
What an episode count does not tell you is how long you will actually be watching. Episode length is a platform decision and it varies enormously across this format — we have measured official channel uploads running anywhere from well under a minute to over an hour, all filed under “short drama”. A 45-episode series is 45 units of whatever that particular app has decided an episode is.
The genre tags do not narrow it down
124 of the 187 also carry at least one genre tag. You might expect those to cluster — a payback story presumably lives somewhere specific. They do not. The most common genre alongside karma payback is female empowerment at 16 series, then modern romance at 12, fantasy at 9, feel-good at 8.
Sixteen out of 187 is under nine percent. There is no dominant setting. The mechanic gets applied across contemporary romance, fantasy worlds, family drama and workplace stories more or less evenly, which is a genuine finding about the label: it describes a shape of story, not a world it happens in. If you came here expecting a genre, this is not one.
Where to go from here
- Want the reckoning driven by the protagonist? Try revenge — 150 series, median 40 episodes.
- Want the climb rather than the comeuppance? Try underdog rise — 170 series, median 37 episodes.
- Want to see the whole shelf? The trope explorer puts every label we track side by side, and the finder lets you filter these 187 by length.
What this page cannot tell you
- We have not watched these. There are no ratings here and there will not be. No platform publishes one, nobody on this desk has seen them, and a recommendation from someone who has not watched is not a recommendation.
- We cannot tell you which are good. We can tell you how many there are, how long they run, and what else they are filed under. That is the whole of what a catalogue page supports.
- The labels are NetShort’s, applied by NetShort. We did not verify a single one against the actual story. A series tagged karma payback might be tagged that way loosely.
- This is not the whole format. It is 187 series out of the 1,885 we catalogue, on one of three apps whose catalogues we can read, and there are apps we do not catalogue at all.
- Episode counts are the platform’s own published figures, cross-checked against its listing pages. They are not our estimates. But an episode count is a count, not a duration.
Every number on this page comes from the same catalogue that powers the database, rebuilt from the platforms’ own pages rather than typed in by hand — so re-running the build gets the same figures we published.

How this page was built
The 187 series on this page carry Karma Payback as a trope label in the catalogue of the platform that publishes them. We do not tag series ourselves, which means this page is exactly as complete, and as inconsistent, as the platforms' own labelling. Episode counts and runtimes are read from each platform's listing for that specific series. We do not score series and we publish no rating of our own, because nobody here has watched all 187 of them. One thing we cannot tell you: no platform publishes a dependable finished/ongoing flag, so a series that wrapped last year and one still posting episodes look identical to us. Where a card here says still releasing, read it as “we have not seen an ending”, not as a confirmed schedule.
