Short Dramas You Can Finish in One Sitting: 168 Run Under an Hour

On the one app that publishes episode length, a quarter of the catalogue takes less than an hour end to end — and the shortest series is 19 minutes. Episode count will not tell you which ones they are.

Illustration — not a still from any series.

“Short drama” describes the episode, not the series. The median series we track runs about an hour and three quarters if you watch it end to end, and plenty run past three hours.

But not all of them. On NetShort — the one app that publishes how long an episode actually is — 168 of 716 series take less than an hour, and nineteen take less than half an hour.

How much of the catalogue fits in an evening

Multiply each series’ episode count by the measured length of its first episode:

Whole series takes Series Share of the catalogue
Under 30 minutes 19 2.7%
Under 45 minutes 90 12.6%
Under 1 hour 168 23.5%
Under 1½ hours 292 40.8%
Under 2 hours 420 58.7%

So roughly one series in four is a single sitting, and two in five fit inside a film’s running time.

One assumption is doing the work here, and we would rather state it than bury it: every episode is treated as lasting as long as episode one, because episode one is the only episode NetShort measures. If later episodes run shorter, these series are shorter still.

The episode count will mislead you

The shortest series in the catalogue are not always the ones with the fewest episodes.

Series Episodes Episode one Whole series Free
The Cheating Bunny 15 74 s 19 min 6 ep · 7 min
She Hurt My Daughter, Then Lost Everything 9 137 s 21 min 4 ep · 9 min
Conquering the Iceberg CEO 30 49 s 25 min 6 ep · 5 min
Midnight’s Edge: Her Vengeance 15 99 s 25 min 5 ep · 8 min
After Her Suicide, the Duke Went Mad 14 107 s 25 min 11 ep · 20 min
Ten Thousand Meters High: The Stepson Inside Me 15 101 s 25 min 6 ep · 10 min
The Silver Dragon Queen 16 96 s 26 min 9 ep · 14 min
He Regrets Losing His Secret Coach 15 103 s 26 min 8 ep · 14 min
The Top Assassin Won’t Be His Plaything Anymore 15 105 s 26 min 8 ep · 14 min
Drowning In The Stormy Night 18 89 s 27 min 7 ep · 10 min
Midnight Taxi: My Passengers Are All Ghosts 15 108 s 27 min 7 ep · 13 min
Quadruplets Arrive, The Tycoon’s Long Pursuit of His Bride 11 155 s 28 min 8 ep · 21 min

Look at the third row. Conquering the Iceberg CEO has thirty episodes — twice as many as most of this table — and still finishes in 25 minutes, because its episodes run 49 seconds. Meanwhile She Hurt My Daughter, Then Lost Everything has nine episodes and takes longer than a fifteen-episode series next to it, because each one runs well over two minutes.

If you are choosing by time, the episode count on its own is the wrong number. We showed the same effect across genres: shelves with few episodes often have long ones.

The short ones give away more of themselves

There is a second reason to look at this group. A short series hands you a much bigger share of itself before the paywall.

Series under 1 hour Whole NetShort catalogue
Median episodes 23 42
Median episode one 107.5 s 158 s
Median free viewing 13.7 min 20.6 min
Median share of the series that is free 33% 18.8%

The free opening in minutes is smaller — fourteen minutes instead of twenty — but it covers a third of the story instead of under a fifth. On After Her Suicide, the Duke Went Mad, eleven of fourteen episodes are free: twenty minutes of a twenty-five-minute series.

That is the practical case for starting with a short one. You find out what it is before you are asked for anything.

What is on this shelf

The under-an-hour group is not a genre. Its most common labels are the platform’s usual ones — revenge on 45 of the 168, underdog rise on 42, karma payback on 35, fantasy on 35, modern romance on 28 — in much the same proportions as the catalogue at large. Short here is a format decision, not a kind of story.

How to use this

  1. Check episode length, not just episode count. NetShort prints the length of episode one on the series page; multiply.
  2. Filter by episodes as a first pass. Our finder sorts by episode count, which gets you close — then apply the multiplication to the handful you are choosing between.
  3. Remember this is one app. ReelShort and ShortMax publish no episode lengths, so nothing here can be extended to them. Their episode counts are all you get.

What this list is not

It is not a ranking. Nobody on this site has watched these series, no platform publishes a rating we could borrow, and a list ordered by our opinion would be worth nothing. This is ordered by running time, which is a fact we can check.

Every figure comes from NetShort’s own series pages in the catalogue behind our database: the episode count, the measured length of episode one, and the paywall position, for 716 series.
