Which Short Drama Genres Take Longest to Watch? Counting Minutes Changes the Answer

Genre length is usually measured in episodes. On NetShort, where episode length is published, the labels' episodes run from about two minutes to more than three, and re-ranking by minutes moves some genres by more than ten places.

If you want to know which kind of short drama takes the most time, the usual answer counts episodes. We have done that too, and found that once you account for which app a label lives on, a handful of genres really do run shorter or longer.

But episodes are not all the same length. A sixty-episode series of two-minute episodes and a sixty-episode series of three-minute episodes are an hour apart. Counting episodes treats them as identical.

On one app we can count minutes instead, and it changes the ranking more than you might expect.

How we measured, and the one assumption involved

NetShort is the only platform we read that publishes how long an episode actually runs: the measured duration of episode one, on every series page. For each of its 716 series with a usable count, we multiplied the number of episodes by the length of episode one to get the time the whole series would take. Then we grouped the series by NetShort’s own labels, keeping the 24 labels that cover at least 25 series each.

The assumption, stated plainly: every episode is treated as lasting as long as the first. Episode one is the only one NetShort measures. If a genre’s first episodes run long to hook you and the rest are shorter, its total here is too high. It is the same assumption behind our estimate of how long a whole series takes.

There is one thing this approach avoids. When we compared genres across apps, we had to correct for the fact that each app’s catalogue runs to a different length. Here every label belongs to the same app, so that problem does not arise.

Episodes are not the same length from genre to genre

Across NetShort as a whole, episode one runs a median of 158 seconds, with the middle half of series between 117 and 196 seconds. The labels sit at different points in that range:

  • Shortest episodes: Modern romance at a median of 129 seconds, Fantasy romance at 137.5, Coporate Warfare (NetShort’s spelling) at 140.
  • Longest episodes: Karma at 189.5 seconds, Rich family feud at 188, All too late at 176.

The longest-episode label runs nearly half as long again per episode as the shortest. That is too big a gap for an episode count to paper over.

Longer episodes tend to come with fewer of them

The labels with long episodes are mostly the ones with few episodes. Across the 24 labels, median episode length and median episode count move in opposite directions, with a correlation of −0.31. So counting episodes does not just mismeasure genre length; for several labels it exaggerates the difference, making a few-episode shelf look quicker than it is in time.

The result is that ranking the labels by episodes and ranking them by minutes gives two noticeably different lists. Their rank correlation is 0.67: related, but far from the same ordering.

The labels that move most

Out of 24 labels, with 1 as the longest:

Label Rank by episodes Rank by minutes Median episodes Median episode one Median series minutes
Rich family feud 23rd 9th 30 188 s 106
Werewolf 15th 3rd 40 164 s 123
Coporate Warfare 20th 13th 36 140 s 101
Modern romance 9th 20th 42.5 129 s 90
Fantasy 13th 21st 40 146 s 90
Fantasy romance 14th 22nd 40 137.5 s 82

Rich family feud is the clearest case. Counted in episodes it is one of the shortest labels on NetShort, 30 episodes against the platform’s 42, and we listed it as a genuinely short genre. Counted in minutes it is almost exactly average: 106 minutes against NetShort’s 105. Its episodes are among the longest in the catalogue, and that cancels out almost all of the difference.

The romance labels go the other way. Modern romance runs a completely ordinary number of episodes, 42.5, but its episodes are the shortest of any label, so the whole series comes to 90 minutes, 14% under the platform median. Fantasy romance has only 5% fewer episodes than average and 22% fewer minutes.

Shortest and longest, in time

Label Median series minutes vs NetShort’s 105
Feel good 127 +21%
Historical romance 126 +20%
Werewolf 123 +17%
All too late 122 +16%
Life OL 118 +12%
Rebirth 116 +10%
…
Karma 93 −12%
Fantasy 90 −14%
Modern romance 90 −14%
Fantasy romance 82 −22%
Tragic love 78 −26%
Family drama 76 −28%

Of the four labels we called short in episodes, only one is just as short in minutes. Family drama is short either way: 30 episodes and 76 minutes, both about 28% under the platform. Karma and Female empowerment stay below average but by much less than their episode counts suggest: about a quarter fewer episodes, but only 12% and 9% fewer minutes. And Rich family feud, as above, is not short in time at all.

At the long end, the labels that run long in episodes mostly run long in minutes too. Feel good and Historical romance each add about a fifth to the platform’s typical watch time.

What this does not tell you

How long the later episodes are. Everything here rests on episode one. It is the best measurement available, and the only one any platform publishes, but it is one episode.

Anything about ReelShort or ShortMax. Neither publishes episode length, so we cannot convert their episode counts into minutes.

Separate groups. NetShort gives most series several labels at once, so the same series can sit in more than one row. The rows describe overlapping shelves, not a clean split of the catalogue.

Whether any of these are worth the time. Nobody on this site has watched them.

What to do with this

  1. When you are choosing by how much time you have, weigh episode length as well as episode count. On NetShort, a minute’s difference per episode adds up to an hour over a sixty-episode series.
  2. Do not read a low episode count as a quick watch on Rich family feud or Karma shelves: their episodes are among the longest on the app.
  3. Romance shelves are quicker than they look. Modern romance and Fantasy romance have ordinary episode counts and the shortest episodes on NetShort.
  4. The same episode-length effect decides your free viewing too. On NetShort, the free opening in minutes depends far more on episode length than on the number of free episodes.

Every figure here is calculated from NetShort’s own series pages, for the catalogue behind our database: 716 series, their episode counts, and the measured length of each series’ first episode. Series minutes are worked out series by series and then summarised, not calculated from the medians in each row.
